Abstract
The ankle joint is a modified complex hinge joint which is so important in weight bearing, ambulation and standing that if it is injured, it will cause significant complications. Like nonunion or traumatic arthritis. Generally it is treated by
operative
method rather than conservative one and the goals of treatment in ankle fracture are an acurate anatomical reduction and repair of surrounding soft tissues and ligaments, diminishing the frequency of complications and early return to normal ankle
function.
The authors have reviewed fifty six cases of ankle fractures whom were treated in orthopaedic department, Wallace Memorial Baptist Hospital from January 1988 to January 1994.
@ES The results in this study were as follows:
@EN 1. Male were affected more common(71.4%) and the age group of third decade constituted 32.1%.
2. The most common type of the ankle fracture was supination-external rotation type(48.2%) and next was pronation-external rotation type, according to the classification of Lauge-Hansen.
3. The causes of the injury were slipping down(42.9%), traffic accident, falling down, direct blow and sports injuries in order.
4. According to criterion of Meyer, the result of the treatment were better in those cases of open reduction and internal fixation than closed reduction.
5. Complications are resulted in 11cases(19.8%) and traumatic arthritis is the most common(9.0%).
